Turn Up Your Living Room Style: A Guide for Beginners

June 4, 2019 by Annie

The living room is the heart of your home and it’s the place where you and your guests will spend a lot of time in. Of course, you want to make the place look amazing.

Giving your living room style isn’t always as easy as you might think. Something you thought would look great end up not working, and you’re back to square one.

Don’t worry, we are here to help. Read on for our best tips to help you decorate your living room and give it some unique style.

1. Start with the Couch

First thing’s first – the couch. All living rooms have a couch and yours is no different. There are so many different styles of couch to choose from and you should give it careful consideration.

You need your couch to be comfortable as well as stylish. Sectional couches are great for moving around and they offer more space for guests to sit on.

Think about the size of the room too – you need to find a sofa that fits the space. Many people choose sofas that aren’t the right size for their living rooms, so you need to take this into consideration. You can add a pop of color with your sofa or stick to neutral colors instead –  it’s up to you.

2. Think About the Walls

The color of your living room makes a huge impact on the style and there is a lot of room for creativity here. You could go for wallpaper patterns that add texture to the room

Or, you could opt for a two-tone style where one or two walls in the room are a different color from the others. This works especially well with smaller living rooms as it helps make the room appear bigger.

If you’re renting and can’t paint the walls, you could always opt for removable wallpaper which you can take down once your lease ends.

3. Make It Green

Not only can plants make your living room look great and more inviting, but there are many amazing benefits of having houseplants.

They help to keep the air clean and different kinds of plants can help your room feel bigger too. Whether you have a lot of space or only a little, you can always find room for plants in your living room.

If you’re worried about neglecting your plants, go for plants like succulents or cacti as they are very low maintenance.

4. Make It Cozy

You don’t just want your living room to look great, but you want it to be a comforting and relaxing space to come home to.

Make it nice and cozy by bringing in lots of blankets, throws, and pillows. Scatter cushions and chunky woolen blankets ad texture to the room and they’re an easy way to add your own pop of color too.

Plus, they’re functional! On cold days you can just wrap up warm and avoid turning up the heating.

5. Choose a Nice Rug

Rugs are a great addition to any living room and there are so many different styles to choose from. If you have a smaller living room, a big rug in the center can make the place feel bigger.

In larger living rooms, you can use area rugs to add different sections to your space. A good style tip is to make the rug match with the color of the wallpaper or another prominent piece in your living room.

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
