5 Reasons To Use Steel in Residential Construction

October 16, 2018 by Annie

Steel is generally gray and is an exceptionally strong material. It is also very heavy and long lasting; this makes it perfect for construction projects. In fact it has been used for years in commercial building projects but there are 5 excellent reasons to use steel in residential construction:

  1. Design

Steel may start life as gray but it can be powdered coated any color you wish. In addition it can be created in a wide array of shapes while still retaining its strength and integrity.

This allows a designer to visualize virtually any style of building and turn it into a reality. In a residential project it can help to create an outstanding home whether you use it to provide support or as a wall cladding system.

  1. Fast Resource

Steel is very easy to get hold off. Simply visit mascot steel to see the amount of steel they have ready to go. This makes it a viable material for residential builds, especially when they are being built on a tight timescale.

Even if you want a custom piece it can be made in a few days;

A bonus point is the strength of steel minimizes the amount of contact points you need with the ground; reducing the time and effort spent digging.

The fact that it lasts for years also contributes to why it should be used in residential builds.

  1. Adaptable

You probably think of steel as long girders, rigid, cold and fairly uninviting. It can be like this but it can also be made in any shape you want.

This makes it possible to adjust any building after it has been created. Steel is excellent at load bearing and can support your building as you make your home more open planned.

All you need is the right calculations.

  1. Recyclable

One of the best things about steel is that it is completely recyclable. The material can be removed from one building and inserted into another or it can be melted down and re-forged into a completely different shape.

This actually makes it an environmentally friendly option!

  1. Earthquake resistant

If you live in an area that is prone to or at risk of earthquakes then you’ll be pleased to discover that steel is earthquake resistant.

As the ground shakes and building fall steel is strong enough to withstand the quakes and flex with the movement of the ground. It won’t crush or crumble; instead it just flexes and continues to support the weight of your building.

This strength is also apparent in the way that it can withstand high winds; although used to support the weight of a building it is an excellent resource and building material to deal with any type of inclement weather.

Don’t forget that steel is also fire resistant. This could help to save your life if you are ever unfortunate enough to have a fire in your own home.

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
