4 Things to Remember when Teaching the Elderly Independence

December 21, 2022 by Annie

With advancing age, parents frequently require assistance with routine duties including meal preparation, prescription administration, and healthcare decision-making. The need for assistance may seem obvious, but many adult children care for elderly parents in ways that are seen as intrusive rather than helpful. It can be challenging to know how to care for elderly parents without taking over, especially given that elders are frequently reticent to request or accept help from others. So how do you assume leadership without making Mom and Dad feel as if they have lost all sense of self-reliance? How can you complete the task without seeming patronizing or infuriating?

Be Respectful

Remember, the elderly are deserving of honor and respect. Do your best to avoid being judgmental or disparaging, despite how hard it might be to try to care for elderly parents. It’s crucial to realize that seniors are not children who require “parenting,” despite the fact that many people refer to caring for aging parents as a “role reversal.”

Prioritize Them

It is in your parent’s best interest to intervene, and you might need to be more strong if they are acting carelessly, neglecting themselves, or threatening their own safety. When a parent is having cognitive problems, this situation frequently occurs. Elderly people who have Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia might not be aware that their abilities have changed and keep up with their regular habits despite the dangers. Even the most routine everyday actions might become unsafe or even dangerous due to memory loss and poor judgment. Then, in spite of their objections, it is your responsibility to step in.

Focus On Their Abilities

Seniors’ talents are maintained and their self-esteem is increased when they continue to perform as many activities and duties independently as they can. For instance, if setting the table from scratch seems overwhelming, take out the necessary silverware before asking your older relative to assist. Or, if preparing a meal requires too many steps, ask them to assist with the preparation or simply to keep you company while you taste-test.

Empower Them

Remind your seniors that the goal of help is to provide them the best chance to do what they desire safely and independently. Consider the cane as an example. One can walk further on their own by using a cane. They will be able to accomplish far more with your assistance than they would be able to on their own.

It can be difficult to accept that you are no longer capable of performing simple things like taking a shower, but there is no shame in asking for help, and we are here to guide you through this transition. Personal care homes can provide you or a loved one with the assistance you require. At some time, relocating to a personal care community is necessary to keep one’s health. Your health might quickly worsen if you or a loved one is unable to manage your prescriptions or finds it difficult to carry out basic hygienic duties. You or a loved one may live longer and healthier if you move into a personal care facility.

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
