5 Ways to Encourage Your Child to Be More Physically Active

November 19, 2020 by Annie

Encouraging your children to stay physically active offers many benefits. It keeps them fit and healthy, reducing the risk of them developing health conditions associated with being overweight in the future. Exercising will improve a person’s mood and sleep quality, which is great for mental health. It also teaches kids good habits that they can continue to follow as they grow up. If you struggle to find ways to encourage your child to be more physically active, here are five things you should try.

Use Every Opportunity

Life as a parent can be hectic, and it is easy to overlook many opportunities that would make your child more active throughout the day. Focusing on a burst of exercise or a sports class can make it much easier to integrate exercise into your child’s daily routine. Walking to school or the corner shop instead of using a vehicle is beneficial and easy to sustain. If you have a dog, going for walks together is wise.

Lead by Example

If parents aren’t willing to participate in physical education, then it is difficult to justify pushing exercise on your children. Kids like to feel grown up and one of the best ways they can feel that way is by following their parents’ lead. If you spend your time at home watching the TV and eating junk food, then your children will follow. Instead, you should become more active and can do so as a family.

Highlight the Benefits

Educating your children about their health and the benefits of incorporating good habits into their lifestyle is important and crucial in their development. Highlighting the benefits will encourage them to maintain a healthy body and could prevent problems later on in life. It can also make them feel happier, more confident, and develop life skills. However, you should not make your child paranoid.

Physical Activity Groups

Physical activity groups are an easy way to get large groups of children to exercise and become more active. They are fun, enjoyable, and teach your children a wide array of useful skills. A fantastic resource known as Skillastics offers both after school and physical education programs to get kids moving. If your children’s school hasn’t got anything like this to offer, you should definitely suggest it.

Make it Fun!

One of the biggest issues with adults and exercise is that it is seen as a chore, but this shouldn’t be the case. Exercise can be fun, as long as you have the right mindset and engage in the right activities. Making exercise fun for your child will increase the chances of them making it a part of their lifestyle, rather than something they’re forced to do. Parents should find a fun activity every weekend.

Incorporating physical activity into your child’s routine will encourage them to engage in it more often. You should make it a fun experience for them, not a chore, as it will benefit your child’s present and future in a large number of ways.

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
