Different Doctor Options When Kids Get Sick

September 2, 2022 by Annie

That’s just one of the many hilarious ironies of being a parent!

There are many opportunities for young children to contract infectious diseases due to their proximity to several sources of contamination. Still, it might be a significant hassle to locate a doctor willing to treat them.

Becoming a parent can give the impression that you have access to an infinite pool of medical professionals whenever you have a question or concern!

However, things get complicated when your child contracts a bug for the eighth time, and you need someone to look into it! Here are various options where you can seek professional children’s healthcare advice.

Option 1: Online or Phone Call Consultation

To obtain much-needed mental development without leaving the house, pick up the phone and call your favorite children’s specialists.

On the other hand, if you cannot visually inspect a problem, it can be challenging to diagnose the cause. Because of this, the nurse will frequently recommend that the patient consult a physician. The most unfortunate aspect is that you must visit a medical professional once instructed.

Unfortunately, your only options are to go to the emergency department or phone the home doctor when it’s the middle of the night.

Option 2: At-Home Physician

It is a helpful alternative to going to the ER when you need immediate medical attention, but it’s not life-threatening. House call doctor may help with minor problems, but they can only do so much thanks to the tools they carry in their briefcases.

It is not uncommon for people to end up in the ER when their regular doctor is closed and the Home Doctor cannot help.

Option 3: Medical Practitioner Who Treats Patients Generally

The results of seeing a primary care physician vary widely. You don’t need to be knowledgeable about working with children to succeed in general practice.

So it’s no surprise that some doctors don’t have the bedside demeanor, tolerance, or compassion for dealing with sick youngsters that the job requires.

When poked and prodded, toddlers, in particular, have a reputation for being combative and disobedient.

Some primary care physicians aren’t up to date on the latest childhood ailments, which is a problem. Sometimes it’s necessary to treat children as if they were a whole different species than adults. Viruses like Hand, Foot, Mouth Disease, Slap Cheek, and many others are common among children but aren’t usually something adults should worry about.

Option 4: Pediatrician

Fantastic people, pediatricians. They focus solely on pediatric patients, and their expertise covers everything from pediatric illness to pediatric behavioral problems. Their offices are equipped with toys, bright colors, and anything else that might help distract a child from the icy-pole stick being crammed down their throat, and they have received special training to work with children.

Due to their expertise, they are the best choice when you must devote time to fixing a specific problem at each appointment.

That’s the rub, right? They are specialists, so you’ll need a referral to visit them, and even then, you might have to wait a long time. By choosing private treatment, you can avoid some of the lengthy wait times if you’re ready to pay extra up ahead. It is a challenge if your child is ill right now and has to be seen by a doctor on the same day.

Option 5: Urgent Care (at a hospital with a pediatric section)

The hospital may be your only option when your child is sick and needs medical attention.

Typically, this entails dragging your children out in the middle of the night and into the cold to wait in a waiting room for six hours or more. In addition, you are typically crammed into a room without adequate ventilation with dozens of other children, all coughing and vomiting their strain of the plague.

Your child will feel even worse than they do right now if you drag them out of bed and force them to sit in the waiting room of the emergency room for hours on end. You better have a solid data plan because YouTube will be your only companion during the delay.

Tips on Selecting the Best Doctor for Your Kids

  • Choose a doctor who works well with your loved ones

There are many things to figure out when you’re expecting a child. Choosing a doctor is a crucial step in caring for your newborn. It’s critical to find a pediatrician who works well with you and your family, as he or she will be a long-term partner in your child’s health.

  • Start looking for your child’s doctor before giving birth

Finding a child doctor should ideally begin around three months before the expected due date. You’ll be exhausted and have a lot on your plate after the kid is here, so it’s best to find a doctor as soon as possible.

  • Consider known medical professionals in your area

Obtain the names of some highly regarded medical professionals, and you may ask your OB-GYN, family, friends, co-workers, etc. There might be hundreds of doctors in your area, and you can narrow your search based on criteria like geography, gender, and location of expertise. Schedule an appointment with your chosen physician online and see their ratings and reviews written by actual patients.

  • Check the Insurance Accreditation

Make sure your health insurance accepts the doctors on your list by calling them first. Determine the cost-sharing that will be expected of you. It will save you from paying extra costs for your kid’s medical needs.

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
