How to Prepare Your Child For Their First Dentist Visit

May 27, 2021 by Annie

Are you thinking it’s time for your child to visit the dentist for the first time? If so, you need to make it as enjoyable as possible so they want to keep coming back.

Seeing a dentist a couple of times a year is very important for our oral hygiene. It helps to prevent problems and keep our teeth healthy.

So, it’s important that children have regular dental visits to pick up good habits. But it’s also necessary that their first few visits are enjoyable so they don’t develop a fear.

In this article, we’ll share tips on how to prepare your child for their first visit to the dentist and how to make it positive.

Read on for more information.

Refer to the Dentist as Something Fun

If your child is particularly young, then you can’t explain where you’re taking them and why. But, they can still understand vocal cues, short words, and body language.

So a good tip is to be excited when talking about the dentist to them. Speak in a high pitch voice and refer to them as “our friend the dentist”.

This will then start to excite and intrigue them and they’ll associate ‘dentist’ with something safe.

Go to a Pediatric Dentist

We recommend that you take your child to see a pediatric dentist, especially if it’s the first time.

Pediatric dentists are trained to treat children and know how best to interact with them. They also have a lot of tried and tested techniques to handle any type of situation.

Plus, their dental surgeries and offices are designed for children. They have fun games and things to keep them entertained. This can help your child to become interested and actually look forward to visiting the dentist.

To find a great pediatric dentist, search for the best dentist near me for kids.

Make Sure You’re Prepared

It’s important you know what the first visit will consist of so you can plan ahead for your child.

First visits are usually a meet and greet with the dentist. They’ll introduce themselves and look into your child’s mouth to see how their teeth are developing.

If your child is nervous, then they can often sit on your lap for reassurance.

Avoid Taking Them When They’re Tired

By now, your child will have a set routine and you’ll know when they’re most active. So, book the appointment at a time after they’ve had a nap and something to eat.

If you take them when they’re tired and cranky then you’re asking for problems.

The dental visit is likely not going to go well and could take far longer. Plus, it will be stressful for you.

Tips to Ensure Your Child’s First Dental Visit Is Fun

As you can see, there’s plenty of ways to help make your child’s first dental visit go smoothly.

Make sure you follow all of these tips and especially regarding making it sound fun. Kids need to see dentists as non-scary so, it’s important to get off to the best start.

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
