DIY Dos and Don’ts

August 6, 2021 by Annie

DIY projects have increasingly grown in popularity in recent years. A lot of people are taking on seemingly challenging projects, which they just can’t finish off. As far as DIY projects go, some rules guide them. This article explores all the DIY dos and don’ts.

Do: Choose a project within your skillset.

Before you decide on a DIY fix, try to determine the purpose of the project you want to do yourself. These projects present a perfect opportunity to do something useful with your extra time. There are a ton of DIY activities that need improvements within your immediate environment.

However, before starting, it’s best to know your abilities and limitations. Assess DIY ideas to see which of them falls within your level of competency. Likewise, avoid projects that require skills you do not have. In addition, there are several DIY projects you should leave for professionals. For example, you should never try DIY HVAC repair, especially if you’re not a trained HVAC technician. If your furnace or air conditioner breaks down, resist the urge to carry out a DIY repair.

As an amateur, it’s not advisable. Rather, contact an HVAC service technician that’s skilled in the maintenance and repair of air conditioning and heating systems. They also have the right tools and safety equipment to repair an HVAC unit. The key takeaway here is that you should choose projects that are within your wheelhouse.

Do: Adhere strictly to step instructions.

Using the right tools and following instructions play an integral role in the outcome of a project. The types of tools depend entirely on the project you choose to carry out. Consider buying the tools you need from a hardware store. If the correct tools are too expensive, consider renting or borrowing from your friends or family members.

It makes sense to gather the relevant materials you need before you start the work. That way, you won’t have to stop at regular intervals to retrieve a tool or material. If it’s your first time trying a project, make sure you look for step instructions with clear explanations. There’s nothing wrong with searching for resources that explain in detail how to do something you have no idea about.

That being said, it’s always best to leave certain projects to professionals. For example, we’ll advise you to leave welding to professionals. That’s because many safety measures need to be put in place to mitigate personal injuries. That’s why DIY experts advocate taking safety courses before attempting certain DIY projects.

Don’t: Avoid expensive DIY projects.

Having a property without a warranty can significantly impact the costs of repairs and maintenance. There’s no denying that the Covid-19 pandemic affected significant sectors of the global economy. Even though things are gradually picking up, spending recklessly on DIY projects is a bad idea.

The overall costs of DIY projects vary depending on the materials and extent of the damage. As a homeowner, look out for low-budget DIY projects that help you save money on renovation costs and raise your home’s value. For example, try to conduct a routine inspection of every household appliance in your home to prevent a total breakdown. In addition, regularly clean, service, and update the air filter in your HVAC system to remove debris, mold, bacteria, allergens, and pet dander.

Just so you know; these air contaminants pose serious health risks to occupants of the house. You may want to change the refrigerant in your air conditioning system to improve the indoor air quality of your home. The bottom line is that you should always prioritize the inexpensive way of doing a DIY task.

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
