3 Tips For Helping Your Teen Design Their Dream Bedroom

September 13, 2022 by Annie

If you have a teen who’s ready to transform their room from the kid zone they had when they were little to a real room that’s fit for a teenager, knowing exactly how to make this transition can be a challenge. Especially for teens who might have all kinds of changing interests and not a lot of experience with interior design, getting everything figured out can be hard to do. Luckily, they have you here to help them. So to help you both uncover where to start with this, here are three tips for helping your teen design their dream room.

Get Them To Draw What They Want

In most cases, your teen will likely already have an idea in their head of what they want their room to look like or what kind of design elements they want to incorporate. So to help you both get on the same page with this, you should ask them to draw out what they’d like their room to look like.

When your teen draws out their dream room, encourage them to include all of the details that are important to them. From the colors of the walls to the furniture they want to incorporate, everything they think they want out of this space should be accounted for. Then, once their drawing is completed, get it printed in a large size so that you can both see it and talk through what they want and how you can make it happen together.

Try For Just One Statement Piece

When it’s a teen’s first time designing their own bedroom, they can quickly go overboard with what they want to include. And when this happens, there can be a lot of competing elements to draw the eye to. However, this usually isn’t how you want a space to be designed.

To help your teen to understand this, consider talking about having just one statement piece in the space. It could be a big mural on one wall, a larger piece of furniture that ties the room together, or a rug that they’ve fallen in love with. Once they have this one piece, they can build the rest of their room around it.

Help Rein In the Color Palette

Another place where it’s easy to go too far with is the number of colors incorporated in their room. So as a good rule of thumb, you should try to get your teen to stick with just two to three shades that they can use throughout their space. Not only will this give the room a cohesive look, but it will also make it easier to find decor pieces that will fit in the space and give them the look that they want.

If you want to help your teen design the room of their dreams, consider using the tips mentioned above to show you how this can be done.

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
