How to Keep Pests Out of Your Home

August 12, 2021 by Annie

Picture this: it’s after midnight, you don’t have to work tomorrow, and you have spent your evening binging your latest Netflix or HBO Max obsession. You just remembered that you went grocery shopping yesterday. Accordingly, you are deciding between a pint of ice cream and a plate of charcuterie to accompany your next episode. As the ending credits roll, you and your blanket-turned-superhero-cape set out towards the kitchen to forage for sustenance.

You flick on the lights and are greeted with eight tiny, beady eyes and eight hairy, spindly legs. Your hunter-gatherer expedition just turned into a capture mission. The target? A giant spider who has been living rent-free in your home for who knows how long. Unfortunately, your blanket cape does not provide you with any real superpowers, so you will likely spend the next 20 minutes cornering the arachnid intruder to trap it in a cup you’ll be too grossed out about to ever drink out of again.

Why are pests entering my home?

The first step to devising a pest control plan is to identify the source. The most apparent reason that pests may be entering your home is doors and windows being left open. It is perfectly fine to keep your windows open as long as you have a screen in place. It can be refreshing to allow fresh, outdoor air to circulate freely throughout your home.

However, a screen can protect you from insects, rodents, and other pests. In some cases, animals or bugs may detect warmth or a food source inside your home. These temptations can attract irritating pests like roaches or crickets. If you have taken proper measures to ensure you never leave doors or windows open, you may need to examine the integrity of your home’s structure.

How can I stop pests from getting inside?

Pests are highly skilled at locating cracks or gaps in your home’s exterior. In some cases, your windows may not be adequately sealed to the window frame. These flaws may be a result of the faulty installation of new windows. Older homes may have this issue due to the expansion and retraction of materials over time.

The best way to get rid of pest-attracting crevices is to weather seal your doors and windows. All Weather Seal Windows effectively eliminate gaps and cracks in your window frame to ensure pests cannot get into your home through tiny structural flaws. Additionally, weather-sealed windows can help lower your utility bill by reducing the amount of conditioned air that escapes your house.

Why should I take pest control measures?

Unfortunately, some insects are more than irritating. A termite infestation, for example, can result in debilitating damages to your home’s structure. Depending on where you live, allowing bugs to make their way into your home can be dangerous. Certain species of spiders and scorpions contain venom that can be extremely hazardous to a human’s health. Thankfully, there are specialty areas of pest control services that can address these risks. For example, if you live in Arizona, looking into scorpion pest control in Phoenix may be beneficial.

No matter where you live in the United States, you are vulnerable to pests. Those who live in urban areas are more likely to deal with small rodents or roaches. Conversely, people who live in woodsy, rural areas may struggle with a spider infestation. Proofing your home for insects and animals can protect you and your house from potential harm.

Most people have too many responsibilities on their plate already to become roach hunters or venomous scorpion warriors. Consider employing window installation professionals to enhance your defenses and prevent insects and rodents from infiltrating your space. If you are dealing with a present infestation, pest control specialists can help you terminate the infestation and prevent future ones from occurring.

About Me

Hi! I'm Annie and I have 3 kids (all in their teens - yikes!). My mommy blog isn't all about lunches and DIY - it's also about humour. Like how my kids make fun of my texts as if I don't know how to use emojis (I DO!). Now that I have a bit more time - since my kids don't want to hang out with me (teenagers), I have taken up blogging.
